Theology and Practice of the Table

In September 2024, students of the Department’s of Worship new program “Theology and Practice of the Table” delved into the significance of meals in missionary life. They tasted the foods from Jesus’ time, explored the formation and originality of national cuisines, and developed practical skills in meal organization.

In these uncertain war times, discussing a meal might seem out of place. Yet, sharing a meal is one of the most profound ways we connect with life—whether we are welcoming new beginnings or saying goodbye. It’s how we celebrate joy, build relationships, and create memories. Our lives are filled with stories centered around tables, sharing meals.

During the “Theology and Practice of the Table” program at UETS, we explore these stories through the lens of the Bible. In biblical times, hospitality meant more than offering a place to rest; it was about sharing food and drink, and the communal table was central to building relationships. Important agreements were often sealed over a shared meal.

These experiences emphasize how meals are woven into both biblical history and modern society. From national dinners and prayer breakfasts to feeding the needy, meals offer opportunities to embody God’s love and share the gospel in a tangible, practical way—building connections between people.

Today, while food remains a key part of social life, its presence in Christian worship is usually limited to communion. This brings the question: What role should food play in worship? How might a fresh perspective on the role of meals transform church ministry?

This program aims to equip ministers – church leaders, deacons, social ministry leaders, missionaries – with a holistic understanding of the “ministry of the table”. It explores the biblical roots of worship and teaches participants how to integrate food into their ministry in creative, meaningful ways.

Therefore, during their study at the “Theology and Practice of the Table” program students will learn to manifest God’s love through the language of taste, hospitality, and communal sharing; plan, organize, and lead meal services within worship, adapted to different contexts; implement effective meal services as part of evangelism; think creatively and create new forms of service and worship through the shared experience of meals.

More information about the program is to be found on UETS website.
