A Ukrainian Theological Response to Russian Aggression
We are pleased to announce the release of a new theological volume titled “Beatitudes and Terror”, a collaborative project of the Eastern European Institute of Theology (EEIT) in partnership with Langham Publishing and Dukh i Litera.
The book features significant contributions from the Ukrainian Evangelical Theological Seminary (UETS). Faculty members Ivan Rusyn and Fyodor Raichynets authored key chapters, and the seminary itself played a central role as a platform for engaging and shaping theological reflection in the face of national trauma. UETS’s involvement in this project highlights its continued commitment to combining rigorous scholarship with a living, practical faith.
This book is a profound attempt by Ukrainian evangelical theologians to reflect on the Beatitudes—those timeless words of Jesus from the Sermon on the Mount—in light of the trauma and upheaval caused by the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine.
In Christian tradition, the Beatitudes are seen as a key to understanding Scripture, a vision of life renewed in Christ, and a moral compass for building a just society. In times of war, they take on deeper meaning, becoming both a source of strength and a guide through existential darkness.
Edited by Oleksandr Heychenko, Roman Soloviy, and Yevhen Ustinovych, the book gathers contributions from Ukrainian theologians, pastors, and educators—uniting theological insight with lived faith and pastoral concern.
The cover illustration was created by Ukrainian artist Kateryna Sad, whose work visually captures the emotional and spiritual tone of the book.
“Beatitudes and Terror” offers a timely and necessary theological reflection for anyone seeking to discern God’s presence and purposes amid suffering. It will be of value to church leaders, scholars, students, and all who seek to walk in hope and faith in a world of violence and uncertainty.
